Old Trafford Floodlight Installation

The Challenge

The floodlighting required an upgrade to conform with additional strict Premier League & UEFA Champions League broadcasting requirements. The old floodlights needed to be removed and replaced with new LED units underslung below the stadium canopies. This work needed to be done without impacting the day to day running of the stadium and without using prohibitively expensive scaffolding. In addition, MEWPS could not be driven onto the grass pitch.

Safety

As with all Vertical Access projects safety is a priority and is at the fore front of thinking from project inception to planning and execution. One of Vertical Access’s core values is to have highest levels of safety which can always be seen at our regular management site safety visits.

Quality

Vertical Access ensured a quality outcome by having a close liaison with the client before, during and after the project. Meeting the client at their Bolton office in advance of the work to view the lighting units, giving input and collaboration on the design, lifting and installation plans and continued to collaborate throughout the project, ensuring that everything ran smoothly from start to finish. Our highly experienced and motivated team have carried out floodlight installations and servicing in stadia around the country for over 20 years.

Innovation

Vertical Access worked with the client, Musco, to develop an efficient lifting plan from the design stage. Musco and Vertical Access worked together to develop a solution for waterproofing the cable apertures which penetrate the roof cladding and to date the system has been leak free. Bespoke digital recording Apps were developed to ensure that installers followed and recorded a stringent and auditable installation protocol.

Agility

Vertical Access were able to react instantly and effectively to additional challenges brought on by a busy, complex and changing environment. This included carrying out structural checks and repairs, assisting the contractor in lifting additional equipment into place and responding seamlessly to the challenges of design changes.

Outcome & Feedback

Working with a quality company like Musco was a pleasure. The stadium now has a world-class floodlighting system. Vertical Access and Musco continue to liaise and collaborate.
