The Scope

The Arndale Centre includes in its portfolio the recent development of high end shops on New Cathedral Street including Harvey Nichols, Hugo Boss and Polo. The works also included the elevations that are adjacent or close to No.1 Deansgate: a prestigious luxury residential development.

The Vertical Approach: Safety, Quality, Innovation & Agility

Safety

In order to undertake the works without affecting either the shop owners and their clientele nor the residents of No.1 Deansgate, the works had to be carefully planned with the building facilities management team, Manchester City Council Highways & Public Realm.

Access systems were designed to allow safe working with high-temperature steam and provide the lowest impact on the traffic in the area notably by using Mobile Platforms [ MEWPs ] and industrial Rope Access undertaken by IPAF & IRATA trained and experienced personnel

Quality

The Doff cleaning system uses high temperature steam delivered at low pressures to clean the surfaces back, or close to, their original colour and remove much of the staining.

All Doff cleaning personnel received the StoneHealth Training Course in the operation of the system .

Innovation

Trial patches to gain client acceptance of the standard of cleaning that can be achieved on each type of substrate and follow-up works on persistent stains treated with ‘Complexion Paste’

Agility

The site work patterns were designed around pedestrian movements, shop opening hours and predicted footfall in out-of-peak season working.

Outcome & Feedback

The client and property owners expressed their appreciation of the results of the stone cleaning and the way in which the works were undertaken with the minimum of interference with their businesses.
